What Is an Equinox?
The term equinox originates from the Latin aequinoctium (from aequus, 'equal', and nox, 'night'). In astronomy, an equinox occurs at the precise second when the center of the solar disk crosses Earth's celestial equator.
At this geometric instant, Earth's rotational axis is oriented perpendicular to the incoming solar ray vector: neither pole leans toward nor away from the Sun. As a result:
- Earth's terminator line spans directly from true geographic North Pole to South Pole.
- Both Northern and Southern Hemispheres receive symmetrical solar flux.
- The Sun rises almost due east and sets due west for every observer outside the immediate polar points.
What Is a Solstice?
The word solstice derives from the Latin solstitium (from sol and sistere, 'to stand still'). Day after day, an observer tracking the midday solar elevation notices the Sun climbing higher or sinking lower in the sky.
A solstice marks the moment when the Sun reaches its maximum northern (+23.44°) or southern (-23.44°) declination relative to the celestial equator. At this turning point, the noon altitude appears to halt for two to three days before reversing course.
During the June Solstice (June 20-22):
- The Sun reaches the zenith (90° overhead) along the Tropic of Cancer (+23° 26' N).
- The Arctic experiences the Midnight Sun: 24-hour continuous daylight north of 66.56° N.
- The Antarctic experiences Polar Night: 24 hours of darkness south of 66.56° S.
During the December Solstice (December 21-22), the orientation reverses: the Sun shines directly over the Tropic of Capricorn (-23° 26' S), bringing continuous daylight to Antarctica and peak winter darkness to the Arctic.
Why Do Dates Shift From Year to Year?
Many people assume the equinox always falls on March 21 and the solstice on June 21. In reality, calendar dates oscillate between the 19th and 22nd.
The cause is the fractional length of the tropical solar year:
Earth takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds (365.2422 days) to complete an orbital circuit from one vernal equinox to the next. Our standard civil calendar contains only 365 integer days. The remaining ~5.8 hours cause the celestial event to arrive roughly six hours later each year, until the quadrennial leap year inserts February 29 to reset the alignment.
