How to Convert Time Between Countries

Scheduling a meeting between New York, London, and Tokyo can be a challenge. Here is a foolproof guide to converting times without making a mistake.

The UTC Pivot Method

Instead of memorizing the difference between every country in the world, use UTC as a pivot. As detailed in our guide What is UTC?, all countries have a fixed offset relative to the central standard.

1. Find the local UTC: For example, Mexico is at UTC-6.
2. Find the destination UTC: For example, Spain is at UTC+1.
3. Calculate the gross difference: From -6 to +1 there is a 7-hour difference.
4. Apply the direction: Because you travel East (positive), the event in Spain happens 7 hours later on the clocks. If your meeting is at 10:00 AM in Mexico, it will be 5:00 PM in Spain.
